Professor R. Geraint Gruffydd

Bu ddoeth ac ni wybu ddig,

Yn addfwyn a bonheddig.

With the death of Professor R. Geraint Gruffydd the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies has lost one of its founders and its greatest supporter. It was Geraint Gruffydd and his close friend J. E. Caerwyn Williams who had the vision for such a specialist research centre, and Geraint was the first Director when the Centre was established in 1985. During his eight years at the helm  he led a team of researchers to edit the great corpus of medieval court poetry by the Poets of the Princes and present it in a magnificent series of seven volumes published by the University of Wales Press between 1991 and 1996. Such teamwork was a new development in the humanities at that time, and the success of this project bears witness  to the quality of Geraint’s academic leadership. Of all his brilliant contributions to Welsh scholarship, this series can perhaps be considered his greatest achievement.
