School of STEM

WindturbineinWalesbyWillBrysonWelcome to the School of STEM. The School was established on 1st October 2010 with its launch on 6th May 2011 in the Millennium Centre in Cardiff. The School provides an overarching academic community for University of Wales students studying in Alliance Institutions and its Collaborative Centres, and their tutors, in not only broad science, technology, engineering and maths disciplines, but also in environment, sustainability, social science and health related subjects.

 The School mission sets out to:

  • Underpin University of Wales validation and quality assurance activity in STEM subject provision.
  • Enhance learning and teaching, enterprise and innovation, and research and scholarship activity in STEM subjects across the University of Wales Alliance and Collaborative Centre communities.
  • Practice and promote the principle of STEM for sustainability and society.
  • Develop and maintain a national and international public reputation of excellence in STEM for the School, University and Wales. 

The School is led by a Dean and consists of four full-time Faculty, and a number of Associate and Honorary Faculty, the latter comprising moderators who act as the University’s link with its Collaborative Centres. There are also a community of Allied Researchers from within the University.

The School supports around 65 courses delivered in Collaborative Centres around the world, which are categorised under three broad subject areas as follows: 

  1. Energy and Engineering Subjects (Programmes Coordinator: Dr Gavin Bunting)
  2. Health Related Subjects (Programmes Coordinator: Jacqueline Young)
  3. Technology and Environment Subjects (Programmes Coordinator: Dr Simon Jones)
