Could you be a Scholar?
The Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarship programme is open to all students, whether from the UK, EU or worldwide and you can be any age. We judge our applicants on their academic qualifications and work experience. There is a lot of competition for places, so we choose only the best applicant for each scholarship.
Our scholarships are unique
The Prince of Wales Scholarship Programme (POWIS) is designed to give outstanding graduates the best opportunities by linking their doctoral research with an ambitious and growing welsh company.
These welsh companies host the scholar for the full three year project and design the research project and objectives.
Each scholar works towards a prestigious University of Wales PhD, whilst receiving valuable training in innovation and entrepreneurship and gaining hands-on work experience with a growing company.
Criteria for Scholars
The Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarship programme is one of the best paid, and most prestigious scholarships in the world. Look through our checklist below to see if you have what it takes to be a scholar:
"I'm not from the UK"
That's okay! The Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarship programme is open to all students, whether from the UK, EU or worldwide. We want you to come to Wales and share your culture and knowledge with us. In return we want to instil in you a love of Wales, so that by the time you end your scholarship you'll love our country as much as we do.
"What qualifications do I need?"
Normally, to qualify for a PhD you need at least a 2:1 at honours degree or equivalent with preferably a Masters degree. Scholars will be based in an English-speaking company, so good proficiency in English is essential.
Previous project management experience is desirable, together with the ability to work well within a team.
As a scholar you will have to start working with the company quickly, manage your time well, project manage your own work, and confidently present your progress to both the immediate project team and wider audiences.
There is a lot of competition for places, so we can choose from the best.
"Am I too young? or too old to apply?"
Never! We don't judge people on their age, gender, mobility or anything other than their academic and work experience.
We care more about you being dedicated and hardworking.
Your role in the company, undertaking research and development, means that your ability to understand the host company's motivations and cope with the work load is more important than your age.
"What about my visa status?"
Scholars are full time students at a welsh University and applicants from outside Europe therefore need to apply for a student visa to the UK. The University of Wales can assist with this process.

"Additional Benefits?"
Being a POWIS Scholar means that not only do you undertake a PhD within a business environment, gaining invaluable academic and industry experience, but you participate in wider innovation management and entrepreneurship courses and events. These range from short courses and lectures to residential and summer schools run by some of world’s leading thinkers in the field of innovation.
POWIS Scholars are also members of the Global Academy Innovation Network| providing access to a wide range of people, businesses and universities in Wales, the UK and worldwide. For example, POWIS Scholars have membership of MIT's Industrial Liaison Programme| through their company placement and are encouraged to work through open innovation models facilitated by our POWIS online network and community.
In 2010 POWIS Scholars were also able to present their research projects to HRH Prince of Wales at his official residence in Wales.
"How do I apply?"
If you think that you would be suitable for the programme please send your CV to powiswales.ac.uk| with the words 'potential scholar' and your field of expertise in the subject line.
