Professor NIGEL Palastanga (Chair),  Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Wales

 

Nigel PalastangaNigel Palastanga was educated as a physiotherapist in the Army and became an academic physiotherapist working in the Army, Kings College, Cambridge and finally Cardiff. He was awarded a personal chair (Wales) whilst a PVC at University of Wales College of Medicine and was PVC (Learning and Teaching) in Cardiff University following merger between the two institutions in 2004. In 2008, Nigel was appointed PVC for University of Wales in 2008 with a learning and teaching remit and with an emphasis on Quality Assurance.

Nigel has been a judge on the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme for 5 years whilst Vice Chair of the Institute for Learning and Teaching andhas a particular interest in quality enhancement and improving the student experience

 

 

Dr Ming Cheng , Research Fellow, Centre for Learning and Teaching, University of Brighton

 

MChengMing Cheng joined the CLT in September 2008, having completed her PhD studies earlier that year.  Prior to this, she studied for an MA in Educational studies at the University of York and worked as a Teaching Fellow in Zhengzhou University in the People's Republic of China. 

Ming's doctoral reserach focused on quality, quality audit and academic work in England.  It examined how the audit process was perceived to have affected the work of academics.  Her MA study explored gender difference in learning English as a second foreign language, the 'brain drain' phenomenon and university merger in China.

 

 

Professor Simon Haslett,Director of Centre of Excellence for Learning and Teaching (CELT), University of Wales Newport  

 

Simon HaslettAs Director of CELT at University of Wales Newport, Simon is responsible for institutional pedagogic research and the scholarship of learning and teaching. He Chairs a Higher Education Academy (HEA) All-Wales Action Set on the Research-Teaching Nexus, sits on the national HEA Sustainability Advisory panel, established and is Editor of the peer-reviewed Newport CELT Journal , and recently co-edited a book entitled Linking Research and Teaching in Higher Education .

Simon has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and edited/authored seven books. He is dedicated to the public education and higher education outreach, has written extensively in newspapers and magazines, gives public lectures, and appears regularly on television.

 

Mr Gabriel Jezierski, Senior Higher Education Academy Adviser, Wales, Higher Education Academy

 

Gabriel JezierskiGabriel is Senior Advisor, responsible for leading the development and co-ordination of a strategic approach for all Academy quality enhancement activities across Wales in line with Welsh HE policy and practice.

On secondment from UWIC, he was Head of Learning and Teaching and ran the Learning and Teaching Support Unit there. He also taught on the MA (Ed) in the Cardiff School of Education. Before that he undertook research at the University of Durham, and at Heriot-Watt, as a mature student, and as part of his MSc studies at the Centre for Studies in Advanced Learning Technology (CSALT) in the Department of Educational Research at Lancaster University.

He has ten years international work experience working in a number of global operations across a range of sectors including three as a bilingual consultant in the Catalan Regional Government’s Department of Education in Catalonia, Barcelona.
 

Mrs Clare Kell , Senior Lecturer in Learning and Teaching, Cardiff University

Clare Kell leads Cardiff University's Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning, following 14 years as a Lecturer in Physiotherapy.  She is passionate about supporting the student learning experience in Higher Education and works with colleagues across disciplines and role to this end.  In 2006 Clare worked with the University to develop an innovative, inclusive scheme of Peer Review of Learning and Teaching which has been well received nationally.  Clare's roles as an Accreditor for the Higher Education Academy and as a National Fellowship Scheme Reviewer gives her previleged access to a cross-section of HE provision and staff development support. 

 

Mr Chris Parry, UW Moderator Champion for Learning and Teaching (Enhancement Initiatives), UWIC

 

CParryAfter obtaining his first degree in 1980 from UWIST, Chris joined the graduate programme of Midland Bank.  Starting work in Pontypridd, he moved to Cardiff (during this time he became an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers) and then London - latterly in the specialised Lending Unit.  On moving back to Cardiff he worked for The Commercial Bank of Wales as a lending manager, General Accident and Abbey National.  He is now a member of the ILT and a UW moderator. 

In 1992, Chris joined UWIC as a lecturer in Financial Services and in 1996, took over course directorship of the Banking a& Insurance courses.  He became a senior lecturer in 1997 and continues to focus on lecturing "because it's the fun part of the job".  His most recently validated module is entitled "Banking & Financial Institutions, something he seems to end up re-writing almost weekly as the global financial crisis tears up all the old books. 

Of himself, he says " I used to read science fiction for relaxation but a new baby, a pany and two guinea pigs has stopped that". 

He is the author of "Lending and Securities" and co-author of Corporate Lending & Securities" and Corporate Banking Law and Practice" and his research interests revolve around Financial Services and personal debt.  He regularly contributes to TV and Radio programmes in his field.
