Online Library
Dear Colleague
I would like to highlight some points about the University of Wales Online Library which should help you to answer queries from your students and staff.
1. Online Library purpose
The Online Library is offered as an additional library resource to supplement the resources available at your institution. The Online Library cannot provide reading list texts but, instead, should be seen as a resource to encourage your students to read more widely around their subject.
2. Online Library access
a. Students
Collaborative Centres are reminded that Global Campus log in details (which give access to the Online Library resources) are sent automatically via email after students have been successfully registered with the University of Wales. Student registration transfers should be completed no later than 30 days after the start of the course to ensure that students have prompt confirmation of their registration and access to the Online Library resources. Registration instructions can be found here: http://www.wales.ac.uk/en/Institutions/InformationforCollaborativeCentres/StudentRegistration/StudentRegistration.aspx|.
Please do not ask students to contact the Librarian or Global Campus Support about missing log in details until you have checked whether students have been registered successfully. Common reasons for students not receiving their log in details by email are:
When students are not fully registered
When students have multiple email addresses and have not checked the email account they were registered with
When students have been registered with the wrong email address
More information can be found here: http://www.wales.ac.uk/en/OnlineLibrary/UsingtheOnlineLibrary/NoLoginDetails.aspx|.
If students experience problems logging in, they should contact Global Campus Support at GCSupportwales.ac.uk|.
b. Staff
(i) New Collaborative Centres must send a list of staff who need access to secure areas of the University of Wales website and access to the Online Library. Instructions can be found here: http://www.wales.ac.uk/Resources/Documents/Partners/Validated/Guidelines/Collaborativecentrestaffaccesstowebsite.doc|.
(ii) Existing Collaborative Centres can manage their own staff list and add new staff members. Collaborative Centres are reminded that they must delete the records of staff members who are no longer involved in the delivery or administration of University of Wales validated degrees. Instructions can be found here: http://www.wales.ac.uk/en/AboutUs/WebsiteInformation/StepbyStepGuides/AddEditStaffRecords.aspx|
Technical requirements
There are a number of technical requirements that are necessary to use the Online Library resources:
-
TCP port 2048 needs to be enabled in both directions. This port is sometimes blocked by the system administrator for security reasons. Please ensure that your IT department enables port 2048 for on-campus computers and for wireless connections. This should not affect home use.
-
Your browser must support cookies and have all cookies options enabled

Using the Online Library
The Using the Online Library pages (http://www.wales.ac.uk/en/OnlineLibrary/UsingtheOnlineLibrary/Home.aspx|) should answer most queries about the Online Library. Please direct students to these pages to begin with. If there are queries that are not answered by these pages, students may contact the Online Library Librarian at librarywales.ac.uk|.
