Bangor Branch - Upcoming Events

Posted on 25 January 2016

The Bangor Branch of the University of Wales Alumni Association continues its 2015/16 lecture programme with two events scheuled for the spring term.

Friday 29th January 2016: Ailystyried yr Ystadau - Nia Powell
Nia Powell, a Lecturer in Welsh History at Bangor University, will discuss aspects of the work of the Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates (ISWE) with a lecture entitled Ailystyried yr Ystadau (Reconsidering Estates). Established at the University in November 2013, the Institute is the first academic centre in Wales dedicated to research into landed estates and the communities that surround them.

Landed estates are important for the study of Welsh history over several centuries, not only for their intrinsic social, economic and political significance, but also as potential prisms for investigating themes such as local governance, the structures of land use and ownership, and literary endeavour at different stages of Welsh history.

Friday, 11th March 2016: Pontio a’r Dyfodol - Elen ap Robert
The second lecture is an opportunity to discuss another of Bangor University’s Major projects – The Pontio Centre. Officially opened in December 2015, the Pontio Centre is Bangor University’s brand new Arts and Innovation Centre. Acting as a major social hub for students as well as an internationally significant centre for learning, innovation and the performing arts, it houses a theatre, studio theatre, cinema, lecture theatres, exhibition spaces, bar and café.

Elen ap Robert, the Artistic Director joins the Branch to discuss future plans for the Centre and how it hopes to contribute to the cultural development of the region.

Delivered through the medium of Welsh, the lectures will be held in the Conference Room in Hen Coleg, Bangor University. Each lecture will begin at 5:15pm and a warm welcome is extended to all.
