University of Wales Alumna and up and coming animator Rhiannon Evans has been awarded a prestigious scholarship from The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

Announced back in September, Rhiannon, who studied for a degree in Animation from the then University of Wales, Newport, was one of ten new recipients to receive one of the scholarships.

The BAFTA Scholarship Programme, which is now in its second year, is part of BAFTA’s charitable activity which assists talented people in need of financial support to study a post-graduate course in film, television or games.

Each BAFTA Scholar will receive up to £10,000 towards their course fees for a year, mentoring support from BAFTA members, and free access to BAFTA events around the UK. In return, the scholarship recipients will share their learning experiences on BAFTA Guru, BAFTA’s online learning channel, and participate in future BAFTA outreach to young people.

Rhiannon’s scholarship will go towards studying for a Masters in Directing Animation at the National Film and Television School in Buckinghamshire.

Explaining how much winning one of the scholarships meant to her, Rhiannon said:

“It's a privilege to have BAFTA invest in me at this stage in my career. I now feel my highest ambitions are achievable with the support provided by this scholarship and that I have access to a network of experience to help me become a successful member of the British film and television industry.”

This year’s recipients were selected by a panel of industry professionals following an open call to students applying for eligible UK courses.

Anne Morrison, Deputy Chair of BAFTA, and Chair of BAFTA’s Learning and Events Committee, who chaired the scholarship selection panel, said:

"This year’s scholarship recipients have great talents which, without the right support, were at risk of being lost from our industries. Through the BAFTA Scholarship Programme they now have access to funding, industry events and one-to-one mentoring, to help them make a tremendous contribution to our moving image industries. We look forward to following their future career achievements.”
