The University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS) is offering two PhD scholarships for autumn 2015 entry. Each scholarship is for a period of three years, and will cover living expenses (£13,863 per annum), full-time UK/EU fees and up to £1,000 per annum for research expenses.
Applications are invited from students wishing to work in any of the Centre’s research areas. Applicants are expected to have a first class or upper-second class degree in a relevant subject.
CAWCS is located in Aberystwyth, adjacent to the National Library of Wales. It is a dedicated research centre which carries out team-based projects on the languages, literatures, culture and history of Wales and the other Celtic countries. It is currently running projects in the following areas: the early history of the Celtic languages, medieval Welsh literature, Enlightenment and Romanticism in Wales 1750 – 1900, and the place-names of Wales. Postgraduate students will be supervised by scholars of international renown, and will work alongside postdoctoral fellows in a supportive environment with excellent research facilities. Student services will be provided through collaboration with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (Lampeter campus).
Students may study through the medium of either Welsh or English. Welsh is the normal working language of the Centre, and every support will be given to students wishing to learn the language.
