Published this month by the University of Wales Press, this third edition of Coastal Systems by Professor Simon Haslett provides an outline of the processes, landforms, ecosystems, and management of this important global environment, including the impact of storms and tsunamis on the evolution of our coasts. It also serves as an important supplement to contemporary conversations on global warming.
Coasts are responsive systems, themselves dynamic with identifiable inputs and outputs of energy and material, and in providing home to more than half the world’s human population, they are where people frequently come into conflict with nature.
With its Chapters illustrated and furnished with topical case studies from around the world, Coastal Systems establishes the importance of coasts within a systems framework - waves, tides, rivers and sea-level change all play critical roles in the evolution of our coasts.
Professor Haslett’s academic background is as a Professor of Physical Geography and is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. In October 2015 he took up the role as Pro Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for International and Enhancement activities across both the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and the University of Wales. He has published a number of books and over 100 scientific articles, and is also a broadcaster, appearing regularly on television, radio and writing articles in the popular press. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Coastal Research.
